An Intro to Me

Hello! My name is Rebekah. I like to think I'm a semi-interesting human being with multiple facets to what makes me a gem of a person.

So long as we're in the multi-faceted gem metaphor, that big section in the middle is the part of me that is a Christian, and my goal in life is that all the other facets can reflect off of that.

  • I love reading and consuming good stories, despite there never being enough time for them all.

  • I love writing, despite not having as much time for it as I used to.

  • I love food and flavors and cooking and trying new foods, despite multiple allergies and health conditions that confine that.

  • I love gardening and watching things grow, despite living in an area that doesnt give much space to do so.

  • I love music - listening, singing, and playing the piano - despite being out of practice on that last one.

  • I love learning. I never want to stop learning new things.

Oval-shaped multi-faceted gem with purple and pink background. each section has a line coming out with characteristics like, reader, writer, nerd, foodie, etc.

An intro to my brand

I officially started Mixins & Fixins in 2021. It may not be my full time job, but I still have a passion for the products I make. I'm always wanting to learn new things, provide new flavors to my customers, and help people learn about my family's approach to real foods.

Unofficially, this started in 2016 when the combined allergies and medical needs of my household demanded that we change how we eat.

  • I can't have gluten, coconut, or moldy cheeses and I'm diabetic. MSG triggers migraines.

  • Dad is allergic to coconut, requires a low-salt diet, is restricted from a list of fruits because of extremely dangerous reaction to medications, and is diabetic.

  • Mom is allergic to almonds and is diabetic. MSG and asparatame trigger migraines.

  • My dad's mother lived with us before she passed away and she required a low-salt diet plus couldn't do black pepper or other spicy flavors and I think she also couldn't do seeds because of digestion issues. I could be wrong on that last one.

  • My mom's mother is the only one with no dietary restrictions.

I felt like with all these issues put together, I was always working with a food venn diagram

a venn diagram made of 4 circles - purple, pink, green, and blue. each circle represents a person in the house and the diagram shows what food items can be eaten by certain family members.

And I decided it would just be easier to make my own mixes that didnt have the things that we couldn't have.

My boyfriend at the time, K, really enjoyed cooking and he also required a low salt diet and his brother is gluten intolerant. So I brought some of my mixes to his house for when either of us cooked and he used them all the time! We may no longer be together, but I appreciate that he encouraged me to make these and start selling them. It's such an awkward concept for modern society but I can be simulataneously grateful that relationship ended while also grateful for what K contributed to my life. I did tease him after we had broken up, he dropped a jar of my spices and needed a refill. No more boyfriend privileges!

My current boyfriend, V, is amazing by the way and has fully embraced my business and is always supporting me in any way he can. Including wanting to wear a Mixins & Fixins tshirt in public to promote me.

A Few Notes

With this blog, I wanted to share some info about my products, the whats and the whys and a few how-tos.

I want to be upfront with you that I do not aim to be a content creator. I will never create a post for the sake of a post or flood you with ads. That's not what I am here for. Nor am I here for making a profit. I do this because I love it and because I believe in it. I will be open and authentic as much as possible.

Everyone sees my logo and is confuzed, or they see my vendor table setup with little porcelain mice and plush mice... you have to understand my pun brain and my possibly-undiagnosed-ADHD brain... They are my mascots. They're spice mice. In the imaginary scene where I'm cooking and baking and making these flavor combos, they're my cartoonish taste testers. They're named Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme.

4 mice around a pan or skillet. the skillet has been sprinkled with seasonings. there is an aroma drifting up from the pan and all the mice are pleasantly sniffing the air.
